Nintendo DS and Wii games to lose online features on May 20th 2014
Nintendo has announced it will be closing down the online services for DS and Wii games, the βNintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
All games with the little blue Wi-Fi connection logo will have online components stop working as of May 20th 2014. The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was launched in November 2005 originally on the Nintendo DS with titles like Tony Hawkβs American Sk8land and Mario Kart DS.
This does not mean all online services from Nintendo are closing on the DS and Wii. The Nintendo DSi Shop, Nintendo DS Browser and Nintendo DSi Browser will continue to operate. Similiary on the wii the Wii Shop Channel, Internet Channel, Youtube and Hulu will continue to work. Nintendoβs βWi-Fi connection service feeβ which was DLC for only a number of games will also be discontinued.
Not every online enabled Wii and DS game used the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, but we doubt they’ll still be running either way. A complete list of games (Nintendo published) has been posted on Nintendo Australia’s site.
Might be time to have one more race on Mario Kart Wii then?

Whaaa? No more online Mario Kart Wii? π Lucky there’s MK 8 coming π
so wait is this going to effect people with 3ds and Wii U?
Nope!
Bye bye Mario Kart Wii , wish I used your online services a while ago π .
Well a lot of games have lost online support anyway like Monster Hunter Tri.
Does anyone know if you can play the older Pokemon games via infrared (offline) – ie. battle and trade without the Wifi connection?
Yes @MysticLegacy, offline Pokemon will still be supported, but no more GTS trading. Get all your pokes now while you have the chance.
Of course you can! This only affects DS/Wii games that have online play. There is absolutely no reason why offline local multiplayer should be affected.
