When Nintendo claimed it was after living room domination, no one expected that included their own television broadcasting channel. At the end of 2009, Japan Wii owners can expect a new Wii channel that is just that. The "Wiinoma" channel will broadcast cartoons, brain age quizzes and lifestyle programs that can be accessed by any Japanese Wii owner, and a stable internet connection. More inside
A VG247 source claims that the next Lego game will be based on Rock Band. Travelers Tales has not commented on the rumour but in an earlier interview they confirmed a Lego game will be released this year, but kept its identity a secret. The rumour that the next Lego game will be based on Rock Band comes at a surprise as Lego titles usually adopt a popular movie franchise. Earlier rumours claimed that the Lego title would feature Harry Potter and friends, a rumour that Travellers Tales refused to comment on.
Pilotwings may be making an appearance on Wii with Balance Board and Mii support, if these shiny new rumours are to be believed. Unconfirmed, as all rumours are, the report claims that Pilotwings will soar in some time in the first half of the year. The last Pilotwings title was seen on the Nintendo 64 - named, accurately enough, Pilotwings 64. Nintendo showed off a Wii-remote based flying demo in 2006, so this could lend a little credibility.
It seems Nintendo Japan have delved into the perilous depths and salvaged a treasure indeed. Super Smash Brothers - the Nintendo 64 original - will be hitting the Japanese Virtual console in January. A great start to the year for them, sure, but if a high profile title such as this has hit Japanese VC then us Westerners are no doubt bound to see it in the not-too-distant future. Japanese gamers get milked for an extra 200 points on the normal Nintendo 64 rate. The same stunt was pulled with Ocarina of Time, though, and we received it at the standard 1,000... so it's likely we won't be struck with the 1,200 point price tag.
You've been playing Wii sports for hours on end and worked up quite the appetite. You're far too exhausted to get up, let alone cook something, so what will you do? Why, order your meal on the Wii, that's what! In the coming months, Japanese Wii owners will be able to order meals through the aptly named "Food Delivery Channel". The channel uses the Demae-can.com online food ordering service. There will, of course, be a wide range to choose from, including pizza, sushi, Chinese food, Japanese food, Western food, curry and more - the channel will even play music to match your selected meal's mood. The other night while I was sitting by the fire, sipping warm milk and stroking my pet gerbil, a rather interesting idea came to mind. My plan was to write a videogame article based around Christmas. Christmas is a time of celebration, where family and friends come together to talk, share presents, pretend they like each other and all that other festive stuff. This all sounds good to the average Joe, but what does all this mean for the gamer? More inside
DSi Ware has launched in Japan, the downloable service which replicates the WiiWare functionality but on a portable basis has come as an early Christmas for DSi owners in Japan and for us. With the complimentary 1000 points Nintendo has given us we’ve been able to download Moving Memo, Utsusu Made in Wario, The Bird and Bean and the Paper Areoplane games. However, Is the content on the store worth your money? Find out inside.
Four years ago, Nintendo let the original Nintendo DS loose on the Japanese public. In 2005, the rest of the world joined in on the fun. So now, nearly 4 years later and despite Nintendo having already released one update to the DS line, it has introduced another. While the DS Lite turned the DS from an ugly duckling to a sleek and stylish piece of consumer electronics, the DSi takes the DS and adds more fun and games to the package. But is the upgrade worth your money? More inside
Crash Bandicoot has come a long way since his original debut in a simplistic yet successful linear action platformer for the original Playstation. Two console generations later and Crash is still around, yet Mind Over Mutant is a good example at how the traditional run and jump style of platforming has begun to phase out, especially in Crash’s case, with his new adventure having much more focus on utilising a variety of mutant abilities to defeat enemies and overcome obstacles in an attempted free roaming universe. With the advent of high definition gaming, a lot of consoles these days don't have "sleeper hits" or titles that you've never heard of that may be good. With the Nintendo DS though, several developers have been able to take advantage of the relative financial ease that Nintendo DS games can be developed with. Dungeon Maker is one of those games that, although it will never get much recognition compared to much more larger budget titles, is still worth trying out. More inside
For those who have mastered all Guitar Hero World Tour tracks when the holidays are not even half way through, rejoice. Activision has released a vast list of tracks that will be downloadable on all formats. The new tracks come from various artist including, Silverchair, Wolfmother, The Vines, Travis Baker, Blink 182 and the latest Oasis album. There are over 20 new tracks, plenty to keep you occupied if you are on holidays. Full track list and release dates inside.
Colin Sebastian’s his name and predicting is his game. The analyst who usually likes to predict sales and general console releases has put his reputation on the line. Colin predicts that 2009 is the year in which Link will once again save the day. This is a surprising claim to come from any analyst as the public is yet to hear any fact or substantial rumour regarding the next entry to the Zelda series. More inside
This week Nintendo sends Europe and Australia the best Christmas gift anyone can get, classic, unmatched titles. This year Christmas is made with the arrival of the multiplayer Super Nintendo hit, Secret of Mana and Sega Mega Drive’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Sonic and Tails) on the virtual console. While both are great titles the arrival of Secret of Mana is the biggest surprise of all as Square Enix has proven to be a bit of a scrooge, when it comes to their classic back catalogue. Perhaps the corporation had a visit from three timely and thought provoking ghosts, bah-humbug.
For those hoping to play Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days on your DS by March 2009, you better change your plans. Square Enix has pushed the release date for a vague 2009 Spring release...in Japan. This means unless you are going to import the title, you could end up waiting till the second or third quarter of next year to nab a copy from Australian shelves. Along with the announcement of a delay some very specific gameplay details were shared; Demyx and Luxord have been made playable in the demo. Luxord: scatters cards around as an attack, high magic stats but low mobility, low jump and The Heartless have an attack that freezes you from attacking back for a moment.
As expected Nintendo Australia are doing disk swaps for Animal Crossing: Let’s Go To The City to resolve the DS Travel Van import error. Nintendo recently called for users who have experienced the error to call Nintendo, now thanks to a member who had registered his name we’ve since learned that a replacement disk will be issued if you can provide your Wii Serial and a serial off the disk. Nintendo then will ship you out an express post bag for you to send back your old disk, then they'll send you a new one. More inside
It’s time for Nintendo to redeem themselves, last week’ VC update was a stinker – Well for us Aussies anyway. However this week we get 4 titles for our downloadable selection, all of course WiiWare and one of them is currently one of the best games on the Wii at the moment. First off the bat is another addition to the Art Style series with Orbient, a fun little gravity based puzzle game based on a game from the GBA Japan only bitGenerations series. More inside
While it’s not 100% confirmed yet, all signs point to fact that independent developer Free Radical has closed its doors with staff being locked out and some of them already let go. Free Radical, developers of the excellent Timesplitters series to the average Haze, had been believed to be working on the next Star Wars Battlefront game as well as the next iteration in the Timesplitters franchise. While signs earlier in the year weren’t great, it’s looking like its totally game over for the UK developers. Not a very good time of the year for anyone to lose their job.
When Activision and Vivendi Universal joined forces a lot of game properties (50 Cent, Brutal Legend among others) got dumped by the company as CEO Bobby Kotick said this was because either they couldn’t be turned into “$100 million” franchises and couldn’t be “exploited” on a yearly basis. One of these game properties was Ghostbusters. But new President of Atari, Phil Harrison, whose company has picked up the license has said he’ll show Mr Kotick just what the franchise can do. When Nintendo is not making games, defeating piracy and creating smiles, they are fighting infringement lawsuits. Nintendo filed a lawsuit earlier this year in June against Nyko, the fumbling accessory queen of the gaming world. Nintendo claimed that Nyko’s Kama Nunchuk, a wireless version of Nintendo’s own Nunchuck, "wholly appropriates the novel shape, design, overall appearance and even the colour and materials used in the Nintendo Nunchuk controller." While EA have had less than a stellar year it seems they face more humiliation resulting from a misleading advertisement of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 showed earlier in August. The commercial shows players holding Wii remotes and responding to the gameplay footage on the screen. The trouble is the gameplay footage in the commercial is not from the Wii version at all and is actually from the 360 and PS3 versions. More inside
Those zany guys from Australian Gamer, Yug and Matt and the ever angry Yahtzee Croshaw have combined forces to put together a pilot for a new game show called GameDamage. The show runs for a comfortable 28 mins and covers a bunch of different gaming topics. It may not have a whole lot of Nintendo stuff but if you care enough to read our site a show covering gaming in general should be on your radar. The guys are also interested in your feedback, check inside for the episode and a link to their site. More inside.
Well look what we have here, big old Take 2 has finally taken notice of the huge install base the Wii offers and admits that while some of its brand may not be appropriate for the Wii it must look into getting some Mature or M rated content on the console. "Even some of the M-rated content that we think is much more appropriate for the [Xbox] 360 or the PS3... we have to look at the Wii as a viable platform, because we can't ignore that install base," Feder said. "We just can't." It begins!
The Nintendo line up for America Q1 2009 is here and curiously, Nintendo has absolutely no new games releasing for the white box. Instead they will be releasing and introducing their “new play control” GameCube remakes, starting with Pikmin and Mario Power Tennis in March. Over on the third party side of the fence, Sega supplies the hardcore crowd with House of the Dead: Overkill, MadWorld and Sonic and the Black Knight. Marvelous Entertainment also brings out their RPG simulator, Little King’s Story which will have to compete with EA’s...SimAnimals. More inside.
