New Super Mario title for Wii U to be shown at E3 – Miyamoto

Miyamoto’s been on an interview spree in Europe, this time confirming a new Super Mario title for the Wii U to be shown at E3 2012. Speaking to El Mundo, a Spanish newspaper, Miyamoto has confirmed to the paper that indeed a new Mario title will be on display for this year’s E3. It probably won’t be the New Super Mario Bros Mii demo shown off at last year’s E3 either, though the premise could be similar.

Also, he’s revealed that he’s working on a couple of small projects at the moment including Luigi’s Mansion 2 and Pikmin 3 as well as preparing Nintendo for when he retires. He’s taking young developers under his wing to teach them his craft. He’s told Nintendo that they need to prepare for his retirement.

He thinks though the Wii U will have a great future. We hope so too and now can’t wait for E3 even more.

Interesting development. Very interesting indeed. I wonder if it’ll be a 2D game or a 3D game.

To be honest I’m more looking forward to the new Pikmin than Mario. Come on Nintendo, show everyone you can launch the Wii U with more than just your core franchises! Although, now that I think about it Super Mario Galaxy was shown off for the Wii pre-release but was actually released something like a year after if I’m not mistaken?

Also, good to see Miyamoto is working on Luigi’s Mansion 2 (or at the very least assisting the team a bit more). That game has potential.

And it looks like Miyamoto’s mention of retirement was a bit of a wake up call for Nintendo and himself. He’s told them they need to bring in new blood – which isn’t a bad thing. Don’t get me wrong, I like a lot of the classic stuff Nintendo do with their games, but that very same thing is often unappealing for others. Retro Studios is an example of bringing in new blood. Their work on Metroid was astounding! But they did also show they can stay true to old-school gamers with Donkey Kong Country Returns. I’m interested in seeing what Retro have to bring to the Wii U and/or 3DS in the near future.

To be honest, if Nintendo didn’t release a 2D Mario or something similar at launch after what happened with the 3DS, I think investors would set fire to their headquarters. Okay, maybe not that extreme, but it’s something that is required. They’re a business, remember.

I loved Galaxy but my one problem with it is that it didn’t really have a sense of place. It just felt like a bunch of random levels dropped into space. I want a Mario where I feel like I’m in the Mushroom Kingdom. Like Mario 64 or Super Mario World! Take me back there Nintendo!

I thought 64 was in the Mushroom Kingdom. I mean, where else would Princess Peach’s Castle be found?
