Bargain Roundup: Nintendo 3DS XL Guide (Updated)
The Nintendo 3DS XL is out next week and if you’re keen on entering the 3DS world or upgrading your 3DS, launch time is usually the best time to pick up a bargain. At least until the price drops $100 on you in 6 months. Am I right?
We’ve looked up all the usual local retailers to find the best bargain for you, the 3DS XL is a pretty good grab at the $249 RRP already but we think you can do better.
The Nintendo 3DS XL comes in three colours in Australia. Silver, Red and Blue and DO come with a charger. This is Australia dammit, we get chargers. (but not docks – James)
If you not sure about the Nintendo 3DS XL maybe you should watch our 20 minute hands on video of it which goes in depth about the new system. It’s pretty rad, we like it. Rad. That’s what the cool kids say right?

Trade in Deals
- Trade in a Nintendo 3DS and get your XL for $129 ($99 if you buy NSMB2) – Check with your manager if they allow a transfer from your original 3DS in store. You’ll need a wireless access point to use to start the transfer as it requires the internet to transfer licenses.
- If you buy NSMB2 at EB (and remember you can price match so you don’t have to buy it for $69.95) then EB will give you a voucher for $40 off the 3DS XL. That will bring the price down to $209.
- $129 when your trade your iPhone or iPad. (Don’t do it, Apple products have the best resale ever and you can get tons more for even the worst model iPhone selling elsewhere).
- NEW: Trade in your Nintendo 3DS and get the 3DS XL + 1 Game for $149. (from EB World Newsletter)
Games include: New Super Mario Bros. 2, Kingdom Hearts DDD, Mario Kart 7, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Resident Evil Revelations, Heroes of Ruin, Super Mario 3D Land and Kid Icarus Uprising.

I wonder why everywhere is giving away Rayman Origins with the console. A nice game to be bundled for sure!
Target looks to be the best deal, could trade in or sell Ghost Recon and/or Rayman Origins to pay for NSMB2
I’m going Red!
Despite Target having the better deal )especially if you haven’t got those games), I’ll go with the Dick Smith sale. Plus, I’m not sure if all Targets do this, but I’ve been told that they open every console unit to check that it’s “all in tact”. It’s probably no big deal for most but just a warning for those who are particular about their products not been tampered with – as you know, you’re buying it brand new and all.
Disappointed that not one place is selling below $248. I’m not interested in bundles, I just want a discounted console. BTW the Dick Smith standalone is now unavailable, though it was listed for $239 beforehand. Also Big W has Super Monkey Ball bundles for $248 and the standalone for the same price. Not sure why retailers are doing that? Perhaps it will drop closer to release?
I’m with you – not really interested in bundles, and would prefer a discount on a stand-alone 3DS XL. Hoping other stores such as Kmart etc offer better prices than these.
Thanks!
If you order the standalone 3DS XL at Dick Smith it costs $239.95!
I was in JB today and they had a poster for the 3DS XL by itself. The poster had a sticker ‘see staff for pre-order’ covering the price of $228 (or $229). There was also another poster for the XL with a game for $248.
Sorry I didn’t get pics, I thought they would have had it advertised on the internet.
Yeah JB’s website is still saying $248 for the standalone. Hoping Kmart may offer it much cheaper than the RRP, although they haven’t advertised it yet.
Dick Smith are selling the XL for $239 alone or $249 with Rayman Origins…
I don’t know if I should get one.. I have a launch day 3DS, and I’ve been offered one for my birthday… do I accept?
I went into JB (Southland, Vic) and their print catalogue in store listed the price at $229 like Tinky said! Also If you buy the 3DS, they will sell you New Super Mario Bros 2, Mario Kart or Super Mario 3D Land for $44!
Wonder if this is up on the site tooo….
Any one know if EB will match the Target/DSE deals?
As far as I know EB don’t match bundles.
I just attempted to Pre-order at Target and that was a bit of a fail.
I’m not expecting to get pre-order bundle from them on Thursday but I’m hoping :P.
I suspect that the pre-order bundles from Target are only available online (which has an addition $9 shipping cost on top of it).
No need to pre-order or buy online at Target – they have the bundles advertised 23rd August til 12th September:

Ahh cool!
I wonder if I can go in and get a voucher now, since I bought NSMB2 on Saturday…
I brought from EB to last Saturday and didn’t get a voucher. I would pick up an XL if I can get it around the $200 mark too. think its time to complain to someone….
JB website now saying $229 for the standalone console: http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/game/nintendo-ds/nintendo-3ds-xl-console-blue/669518
Just saw their Tweet, updating!
Copied over from Kotaku:
If I were to upgrade, do my save games for the titles on the system (Ambassador, eshop titles etc) carry over? Easier question – what doesn’t get transferred if I get to do this in-store?
What about non-3DS titles (DS/the above mentioned stuff), I hear they are in some cases better looking?
Wait, what? EB Games are giving out $40 off 3DS XL vouchers? I pre-ordered the NSMB2 gold coin edition from them (waiting for it to turn up) so how would I get this voucher?
Got a price match for $54 on NSMB2 at EB Knox today. They then gave me the $40 off voucher for 3DSXL! Bring it on thursday! 🙂
Is there any other way to get one of these EB Games $99 trade-in vouchers other than buying NSMB2 from them? I already picked up NSMB2 from Target…
I really should know not to ore order these things to far in advance. 😛 There are some great deals I’m seeing now days.
Picked mine up from JB and they offered me a couple of bundles I picked up the XL with Super Monkey Ball and a starter kit (console case, 2x stylus, 2x game cases, screen protectors) for $248.00
The also had a bujndle for the console and a game for an extra $20-$30 (sorry I forgot the exact price)
the games available were games like new super mario, 3Dland etc

Has anyone seen any decent cases or screen protectors for XL ? I didnt find any in stores today
I’m also on the hunt for a decent case. JB Hifi and Target had some but they looked pretty rubbish. I want one that has holders for game cartridges as well.
I’d like one of these Hard Cases:
http://www.amazon.com/Official-Nintendo-Universal-Hard-Case-DS/dp/B003V4AK8O
I have one of the DS bags like shown here (I got it last week from ToysRUs):
http://vooks.net/new-nintendo-themed-ds3ds-kits-and-bags-coming-to-aussie-stores-in-may/
Yeah that first one looks pretty good – surely that wouldn’t fit a 3DS? I want something like this one: http://stores.horiusa.com/-strse-162/3DS-XL-Hard-Pouch/Detail.bok – except it hasn’t been released yet. Hard to believe there isn’t many companies trying to cash in… seems to be a serious shortage of 3DS XL cases…
I would have thought the 3DS XL would have fit in the above case since it is DSi XL size.
I hope new cases arrive soon. I’ve been looking in stores and haven’t found anything I like.
I got one of these with my 3DS XL: http://www.bigw.com.au/catalogue/get-active/technology/electronic-gaming/bpnBIGW_0000000319531/3ds-xl-essentials-pack-red
I’ll let you know whether it’s any good when it arrives.
Oh dear, it seems like it’s gonna be hard to buy a 3DS XL. Big W hasn’t got one listed on their website, JB Hifi has run out of stock, Target/Kmart isnt listing it either and EB Games is going over the $250 price to offer games I already have. I was hoping to have one before my birthday so I could enjoy NSMB2 properly but that seems unlikely now.
There should be stock in store but the websites are not being very helpful.
The Target where I got mine had heaps in stock.
Just letting you guys know I picked up JB’s $248 bundle, but since they had run out of Super Monkey Ball, they gave me $14 credit towards any of the “$44 when you buy a 3DS XL” games… So it works out to $278 with a starter kit and your choice of one AAA game (eg Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Kingdom Hearts…)
EB Games give you a free voucher which nets you $40 off of your XL purchase. I don’t know why there doing it, but is the best deal around price wise. Only $209
