Editorial: Where’s my Wii U Release Date and Price?!

This is not the angry rant you’re looking for. Instead it’s a calming soothing article, you won’t get many of these out of me per year so listen up!

People are getting understandably antsy about the Wii U price and release date, to save some stress I went back into the archive to look when Nintendo announced the Wii date and price. The last system to be released at Christmas.

Nintendo announced the Japanese launch details on September 6th, Nintendo Australia and Europe did it 10 days later on the 15th. The release dates were the 2nd of December for Japan and the 6th and 7th of December for Europe and Australia.

So if history is anything to go by there’s under a month until we find out how much it costs and when we can get our hands on it! Then again it is 2012, things have changed. Our prediction, once Nintendo clears the release decks with the 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros. 2 we’ll hear something out of Nintendo. It might be a Nintendo Direct but we think it’ll be a big conference.

Go play some games for a month, then come back. Not long now.

SOON

The issue with Wii was that honeymoon period was very short-lived. The stuff that came out at launch was great for what it was worth, and after that first year the good stuff really started flowing.

That spot in between, we got what – Zack and Wiki, WarioWare Smooth Moves? That was the weak spot, and was around the time people who visit sites like this started whining about the console and what ‘harm’ it was doing to gaming.

I get that the Wii U release/price is being saved for a big reveal, and I get that the term ‘launch window’ is an accepted business model now. But it’s that honeymoon period, at this rate it’ll be ALL of next year, that will really see people jump on or not jump on.

Yeah lots of the media and the ‘internet’ were against the Wii from day dot, it took about 6 months for fans to start to turn on it and it wasn’t pretty.

Nintendo and the third parties I think have a solid ‘launch window’ but you’re right straight after that which is Summer in the US there’s nothing so far, Nintendo and third parties are bull at a gate but there has to be a follow up.

We’ll have the date and price soon and be able to mull over that but it’ll still be about what’s next.

While I have no idea if this is true, a staff member at the Nintendo Experience in Melbourne said that Nintendo had said to them that the details will be released in September!

While the release date is obviously very important, I’m more interested in the price! I am expecting a price around US$300 which hopefully means NintendoAU won’t charge more than $399!

Yeah price is the thing that interests me immediately so that I can start my targeted saving.

Have pre-ordered my Wii U, and really looking forward to getting it. Hope black will be available in Aust/NZ at launch. It is going to be one giant of a handheld in my opinion and that is a good thing, cause I play mostly on Ninty handhelds. I am quite happy to wait for the announcements of price and date, got a stack of DS & 3DS games to keep me happy in the meantime. Happy days.
