Everyone knows that Mario’s real name is Mario Mario and that Luigi’s is Luigi Mario. But did you know that Yoshi also has a real name?
For the past twenty plus years Yoshi has been hiding a secret, his real name is T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas. The name has come to light from author of Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle that Defined a Generation, Blake J. Harris’s Twitter account who has posted scans of a Nintendo Character Guide from 1993. Yoshi’s name is listed alongside his biography which also refers to Mario as a ‘homo nintendonus’.
The guide was printed in the early 90s for people who wanted to use Nintendo’s characters in approved advertising and products. The book also contains the personality of Nintendo characters, the exact PANTONE colours that the characters should be and much more.
This news is almost as crazy as when everyone realized the clouds in Super Mario Bros. are the same sprite as the trees just recoloured.
T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas we salute you.
