Wii U Zelda graphics may differ from demo at E3

Zelda producer says fans shouldnt read too much into the trailer

One of the surprises of Nintendo’s E3 conference last month was the demonstration of the Wii U’s graphical power with a short scene from a possible future Zelda game. The scene showed Link fighting a huge-ass spider, for those playing along at home. The graphics looked absolutely gorgeous, with the detail on the spider and the great lighting effects. However, series producer Eiji Aonuma has come out and suggested that seeing may not be believing, and it’s not the first time this has been the case.

“You probably remember that when we introduced the GameCube, we showed a somewhat realistic Zelda demo,” Aonuma says. “And what we actually created was the cel-shaded Wind Waker. So when we show a graphic demo, people think, ‘Oh, this is what the next Zelda will look like,’ but that’s not necessarily the case.” In fact, the Zelda team was already well into developing the cartoony world of Wind Waker when the demo was shown. Sneaky. Aonuma does note, though, that the Wii U Zelda demo was not produced by his team but, rather, art director of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Satoru Takizawa.

For now, Aonuma and the Zelda team have just wrapped up development of Skyward Sword, which has been five years in the making. It will be one of Nintendo’s final smash-hit titles for the Wii when it’s released later this year.
