Wii U Firmware 3.0 Update Now Live – Go Get Downloading
Nintendo’s long awaited ‘Spring’ update to the Wii U has now rolled out across the world. The update’s primary improvement is the time it takes to return to the Wii U menu after leaving a game or app. It has has been significantly improved as demonstrated by Nintendo a couple of weeks back.
However there has snuck in a couple more nice new features into this update as well including the ability to move downloaded content between different hard drives, the ability for the Wii U to automatically download software updates without needing prompting from a user, and the ability to install these updates seamlessly even while you are playing a game on the system. Games and other data can also be downloaded and installed while the system is in standby, similar to the 3DS.
You can now boot straight to Wii mode by holding down the B button on the GamePad when the system launches.
The most exciting part though is that ‘the day after’ the update Nintendo has said the Wii U Virtual Console will go live. We’ll let you know when that is exactly.

Im happy to see the HDD transfer option available now. My first HDD I added to my Wii U was very unstable and continually disconnected from the console and appeared to just work extremely slow.
Has anyone installed a HDD though and then swapped? I went from a 500gig to a 2TB and my Wii U says I only have about 600gig available? Maybe this update will change that.
The Wii U can only recognize 1TB of external storage, so that extra 1TB won’t ever be used. I don’t know why it says you only have 600GB though.
yeah I’m pretty sure its 2TB
That’s odd… it recognises my 2TB no problem…
Finished downloading update. I then receive a message that the update will be installed after powering down the console. Turn Wii U off. Turn it back on. Console bricked. Well done Nintendo, you just made my console useless.
I just double checked because of your comment Zombie_X. It does recognise mine.
USB Storage Device 1
Free Space 1748 GB
Maybe it depends on the hard drive your using… Who knows.
Nintendo themselves have said themselves the Wii U supports 2TB hard drives. Even if it didn’t, that wouldn’t explain the strange 600gig limit rather than a 1TB.
Anybody know how big the update is to download. My internet is crap and data plan for tethering is small.
From what I have heard it is 350MB. So smaller than the initial update for the system but still fairly hefty.
wow, it’s all nimble and slick and such a massive difference 🙂
Okay so the hard drive issue remains :-/ Im going to have to format it when I get a new HDD to transfer everything off and see if that returns it to a 2TB limit.
Putting that aside, wow! Closing software hasn’t been that much faster but MH3U loaded in half the time. I cant wait to see if its impacted the speed of loading Lego City.
umm you were supposed to just touch the ok button on the gamepads screen and it would have restarted and installed on its on…..
it is 703mb in aus at least
