Katsuya Eguchi talks about recalibration, the next Zelda on Wii, and his future plans for MotionPlus-enabled games

Producer of Wii Sports Resort, Animal Crossing: Lets Go to the City and Wii Music, Katsuya Eguchi, recently talked to GamePro about Wii Sports Resort and the MotionPlus.

One area where Wii Sports Resort (and the MotionPlus) has received criticism was the recalibration sometimes needed mid-game. When asked about whether it was due to the MotionPlus itself or just the game, Eguchi-san responded by saying, "there is [a] very precise sensor inside Wii MotionPlus that occasionally needs to be recalibrated, especially when cycling through a variety of different game mechanics, as can be the case with Wii Sports Resort. Sometimes Wii MotionPlus is able to handle this on its own without any action from the user, but it occasionally required a manual recalibration." He also mentioned that they "will try to minimize the need for recalibration in the future, and look for ways to make the process of recalibration less impactful [sic] on the player."

At this years E3, Shigeru Miyamoto said that the next Zelda on Wii would utilise the MotionPlus if Wii Sports Resort was successful. Katsuya Eguchi answered a question about whether Wii Sports Resort had reached Mr. Miyamotos sales targets by admitting that, "to be honest, I really dont know what he is planning. I am personally proud of what we achieved with the Swordplay and Archery activities in Wii Sports Resort, so I ask Mr. Miyamoto and Mr. Aonuma all the time to try and integrate similar mechanics into their next Zelda title!"

Regarding any plans for new Wii Play, Wii Fit, or Wii Music games incorporating the MotionPlus and new gameplay ideas from Wii Sports Resort, Eguchi explained that, "for every new device, we always strive to demonstrate its full capabilities to consumers. Regardless of the title, our goal is to always provide a fresh and original experience, rather than copying what worked in the past."

Which Wii games would you like to see revisited with MotionPlus controls, and would you support a MotionPlus-only Zelda game? Let us know in the comments section below or on the forum.
