In the latest issue of Nintendo Dream Shigeru Miyamoto talks about the decade that was the 64 and Gamecube as well as some thoughts about the Wii’s impending future. And the possibility that GC games could make a come back on the Wii! Translated loosely by Jonnyram of NeoGAF, Miyamoto talks about how the Wii will mark the next decade in Nintendo’s history and due to the nature of the Wii titles which run on slightly modified Gamecube dev kits he is thinking of remaking Gamecube games to make full use of the Wiimote.

The interview is as follows…

Nindori: So you think games will experience a rebirth thanks to the Wiimote…
Miyamoto: Yes. Of course you can wander into a second hand shop and buy a lot of these games still, so I don’t think we can release these Wiimakes at full price. Since a lot of the development cost has already been accounted for, we’ll be able to release these at a much more affordable price. And if others also take advantage of this and release Wiimakes, there’s a high possibility of a lot of software from third parties also.

Nindori: So, there’s a possibility of Nintendo doing this?
Miyamoto: Yes, I strongly believe there is. For this reason, the next Zelda will be released for both Wii and GC simultaneously. It’s quite an interesting experiment.

Nindori: Ah, I see.
Miyamoto: Also, when we were working on it, some of the staff were saying “”Since the Wii has more power than the GC, let’s polish the graphics up a bit too””, but Zelda’s fans aren’t expecting polish, they’re expecting a fun and exciting game, so I said it is better if we make it fun both on Wii and GC. And recently it’s been established that “”Wii is not a machine that tries to deliver next-gen graphics””. Of course, since there are still games that demand high quality graphics, there will be separate paths of development depending on the software.

Miyamoto goes on to talk about previous projects that seemed to disappear into oblivion over the years. Ones of interest that were brought up included Mario 128 which was a test concept for the Gamecube. Some elements have now moved onto Mario Galaxy, including the ability to run around planets and the gravity. Marionette is still in development and on it’s way to the Wii sometime in the future. Finally the much rumoured Mario 64-2 has ceased to exist, many of this projects ideas having since become a part of other titles, all of which Miyamoto cannot recall.
