The nearly two-year old Mario Kart Wii returns to the top spot, followed by other Nintendo chart regulars Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Play. Last week’s release of hardcore multiplatform titles Bayonetta and Darksiders did well to at least appear in the charts but neither they nor the high profile Modern Warfare could make a dent in Nintendo’s stranglehold on local software sales. Looks like boobs guns and gore don’t sell like they used to. It also looks like Codemaster’s Christmas favourite ‘Cricket’ has also dropped off- failing to appear in the Wii top ten.
We can’t help but be disappointed that recent Wii titles such as Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles and Rabbids Go Home have failed to chart, despite being some of the best new content to come out in recent months.
On the DS front, it’s the usual pile of garbage with the very excellent Zelda Spirit Tracks dropping in sales compared to the craptacular assortment of Brain and Math training titles. It also looks like Pokemon titles may disappear from the charts briefly in the next few months – a typically quiet part of the year for games sales. The drop in Pokemon sales is sure to be temporary only, as the mid-year release of Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver are guaranteed to dominate DS sales until the year’s end.
