Ubisoft knows compulsory Motion Plus a risk for Red Steel 2
Ubisoft say they know the risks of making Red Steel 2 require the Wii Motion Plus, but say its needed.
The sword fighting in the first Red Steel was the definition of mixed bag- sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t, but the overall experience was generally lame. Ubisoft have had enough of that, and have forced Motion Plus into the upcoming Red Steel 2. However, forcing people to use an accessory that not every Wii-owner may have purchased is fraught with problems and is a worry for Ubisoft.
Creative Director of Red Steel, Jason Vandenberghe has revealed that "It’s a huge risk. We have no idea what the penetration rate for Wii MotionPlus will be. We assume high. We would like it to be high. I would love to say to you that it’ll be compatible with just a regular controller, but the gameplay simply isn’t there without MotionPlus. That core experience just isn’t there without it."
Fortunately for Red Steel 2 and Ubisoft, the game isn’t out until later this year. In the mean time several games will have been released that support it or have been bundled with it. Wii Sports Resort will have also been release and be bundled with it – and if Wii Sports Resort sells anything Wii Fit then there should be plenty Motion Plus units to go around.
