There are now more than 2 million Wii consoles out there in Australia according to a release from Nintendo Australia today. It’s only taken the little white, then black (and now red) box a mere 47 months to reach the figure too. This betters the record held by the Nintendo DS which took 52 months to get to that stage.
The achievement is great overall and brings the total number of Wii consoles sold this year to somewhere in the 300,000s. Previous reports had pegged the Wii at 1.7 million at the start of this year.
The Wii still has a bit of a trek to overcome, with the Nintendo DS currently sitting on the top of the pile with somewhere around 2.5 million units sold. That figure is from earlier this year and we’re sure Nintendo has sold a ton more since then. The Wii has received a price drop this year and will receive a new colour this week which will no doubt help keep the sales coming along. Wii sales worldwide are still on a downward trend; we’re not sure if this applies to Australia as well as we don’t get figures on a regular basis.
The Nintendo DS also toppled the Playstation 2 earlier this year, and now the Wii is eying it up.
