In Japanese gaming magazine/bible Famitsu, MistWalker have revealed brand new details about The Last Story, specifically how it’s multiplayer and online functionality will work. Multiplayer will be a largely separate component from the standard game, with the option being selectable from the title screen. From there, players have a few options as to how they will progress.
Players can engage in battle in either Versus or Raid mode. Versus pits players against each other while Raid allows players to joing together to battle a certain boss. All modes have lobbies which are voice chat enabled, and all modes allow players to play against random players or with friends, as well as playing both ranked and private matches.
Raid Mode is the more interesting of the two modes, as players select a hero from Elza and all of his mercenary friends, and then take their equipment and battle prowess against boss creatures. In this issue of Famitsu, only two boss enemies were shown; Kraken, a large aquatic monster similar to a giant squid, and Atar, a monster with many wings who is capable of flying around the battlefield at will. Defeating enemies in Raid Mode unlocks items that are themed around the boss character defeated, although these boss battles are meant to be quite hard, with some of them having more than one life bar.
Versus Mode allows players to choose from Elza, his mercenaries and other non playable characters encountered throughout the game’s main story mode, and each of these characters can be customised although Famitsu insists these are purely for aesthetic and cosmetic purposes. Following a selection of stage, players battle it out to get the most points at the end of the five minute time limit, while items are spawned into the arena to mix things up a bit – similar to Mario Kart or Smash Brothers. Additionally, team battles are also going to be supported.
The Last Story is shaping up to be one of the best RPGs available for the Wii, nay, any console, and the news of the multiplayer functionality as well as online is no doubt music to all of our ears. MistWalker and Nintendo have thus far only confirmed a release date for Japan, but we have a feeling we’ll see this on our shores eventually. As always, we’ll keep you updated.
Not ideal.
Finally, some preorder bonuses.
Nearly 1000 games discounted, a lot of them very good.
Sid's back, there's a beefy cat, a phantom hero, and a moon.
