Switch opening weekend sales double that of Wii U in the UK
With the weekend well cleared we’re starting to see stories from around the globe about just how well the Nintendo Switch and Breath of the Wild have sold.
In the UK the Switch managed to double the amount of Wii U’s sold on launch, which really wasn’t that hard. The Wii U sold 40,000 opening first week, the Switch sold 80,000. For comparison the Wii sold 105,000 and the 3DS 113,000. The are still well behind the PS4 and Xbox One launches, but those also launched during the holiday season, not March.
There’s no figures for Breath of the Wild but there are chart positions. Topping last week was the PS4 exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn, with the huge install base the PlayStation 4 has in the UK it’s not surprising. Breath of the Wild did well though taking out second and third position, the split between the Switch and Wii U versions was also 78% to 22% which would have also affected the ranking.
1-2 Switch claimed fourth spot, Super Bombermban R and Just Dance 2017 were also in the mix.
It’s imported to remember this is just the UK, quite a small market compared to America or even the rest of Europe – but they’re also one of the only few that actually publicly report things.
