Nintendo has announced Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo Switch during this morning’s Nintendo Direct.
Its official title is: Nintendo Switch Super Smash Bros. (working title)
No gameplay was shown just yet instead of a trailer announcing the Inkling’s coming to the game.
It’ll be out in 2018.

This trailer gives me fkn goosebumps it’s so well done,
I’m really confused as to whether this is 5 or not. Apparently that’s BotW Link, which makes the Inkling simply being a new character a bit unlikely.
It’s possible for them to just shove the 3DS and Wii U versions together, add some new stages, characters and modes and call it 5, though.
I liked the trailer. It somehow made the Smash emblem look like a final boss or a threat or something, Subspace Emissary style.
A couple of things hint to me this is a “DX” version of Smash 4:
1. The Smash logo and its styling is the same as Smash 4.
2. The development time between 4 and now is too tight to come up with a whole new game
3. Reissued (major) first party WiiU titles are in Nintendo’s best interest, given they’re low effort for the majority of people that didn’t play it on WiiU.
It is NOT the same logo as Smash 4, the copyright is 2018 not 2014-2018, and at the end of the trailer the corner says: Original Game.
I’m also thinking it’s a 4 DX.
What Paige said. All the other ports in the Direct had a copyright dating back to the original game. This does not. And yeah, I doubt it would explicitly say Original Game on the trailer if it wasn’t.
Smash is always a modified version of the previous game anyway so I think it’ll be new.
1. No it isn’t. It’s closer to Melee. The fiery smash ball has been a thing since the original game. In fact they’ve outright ditched the embossed aesthetic of 4 in favour of minimalist black.
2. Almost four years is plenty of time to make a video game, and there’s no reason they can’t reuse the engine and models for a new game, saving plenty of time.
3. True, but there would be no reason to not announce it as a port and show game play in that scenario, like with every single other port.
It’s obviously a new game.
