Super Nintendo Virtual Console coming to New Nintendo 3DS
Well it finally happened, Nintendo has announced that from today (or right now) that Super Nintendo games are coming to the Virtual Console, but only on the New Nintendo 3DS.
The reason? The New Nintendo 3DS has the available CPU power to properly emulate the SNES, the older model does not. Over the next four weeks there will be two new SNES games released each week starting with Super Mario World and Earthbound.
There will be a discount available each week, if you buy one game you’ll get the other one cheaper. So buy F-Zero, Super Mario Kart is cheaper that week. The games are the ‘standard’ SNES price of $10.40 and you’ll get 50% off the other – so $5.20.
Sadly it does not appear that there is any cross buy with these titles. So if you have already paid for them on the Wii U… you’re not going to get them cheaper (or free) on the New Nintendo 3DS. That’s a bit of shame in 2016.
The schedule is below;
Disappointed about there not being any cross buy, but considering Nintendo’s track record, I’m not surprised. Keen for Earthbound though. Big RPGs like that are better on portable, for me anyway.
Anybody who is considering buying both should buy Super Mario World first, followed by Earthbound.
Super Mario World ($10.40) + Earthbound [50% off] ($6.50) = $16.90
Earthbound ($13.00) + Super Mario World [50% off] ($5.20) = $18.20
I bought Earthbound first and was offered 62% off Super Mario World ($3.90). They must’ve sorted out the price discrepancy.
That’s good then.
I already own most of these on Wii U, so they’re a little too expensive to consider double-dipping… and then there’s the fact that I paid only 30c each for Super Metroid and F-Zero during the 30th Anniversary Famicom promotion in the Wii U eShop shortly after launch.
But then… I never play SNES games on Wii U because I usually prioritise disc games. I might actually PLAY some of these if I downloaded them to my 3DS… so I am a little tempted.
Unfortunately earth bound is a terrible game, otherwise i would consider the 50% off for Mario
I’d be keen on these but the lack of configurable controls turns me 100% off of the 3DS and New 3DS virtual console. It’s also really dumb that this SNES virtual console isn’t available for regular 3DS users.
It’s Nintendo’s way of saying “upgrade” if you want to play SNES on 3DS!
