Titled the ‘black and white effect’, Mario will be able to activate switches in certain levels. The new feature had a very brief appearance in the official announcement trailer shown last month at E3. The keen-eyed people at Nintendo Power Magazine spotted the new gameplay mechanic, and quizzed Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto about the switch’s black and white effect. Miyamoto’s responded – “We haven’t revealed that yet but maybe I can talk about it…It’s an effect where time slows down. There’s a slowdown in time within the game – probably pretty much what you had expected.”
The sequel to the 2007 platforming masterpiece is likely to ramp up the difficulty from its predecessor, with the development team promising they will resurrect some gameplay features designed for the original but which never made it into the final version.
