Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition allegedly only runs on 50Hz
After all the hype for this special package, it might not run on your television
If you live in Australia or Europe and have bought any number of Virtual Console games in the past, you may have noticed that many of them look funny on your display, with borders on the top and bottom of the screen. At worst, you may have downloaded a title only to boot it up and be stuck on a blank screen. The issue stems from games that don’t support a 50Hz screen refresh rate, or haven’t been properly converted to do so.
What this means is that if you have a relatively new television or other display connected to your Wii, the Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition might a) not be playable, or b) not run at full speed/screen. The reason we haven’t had this problem before is because nearly all retail Wii games to date have supported the 60Hz rate, used by all modern televisions.
It is an odd move by Nintendo to distribute the game in 50Hz only. It seems they want the game to be backwards-compatible on old (PAL) televisions rather than forwards-compatible on some of todays 60Hz only displays, if reports are true. We will confirm and let you know whether or not the issue is prevalent on Australian copies of the game shortly. In the meantime, we suggest you check out the owner’s manual of your television/monitor to see if it supports a 50Hz refresh rate.
