Working with Nintendo and Epic to make it happen
Talk of Final Fantasy XV on the Switch has been floating around for some time. Then at Gamescom the Pocket Edition of Final Fantasy XV was announced and many figured that the less powerful Switch would just be getting that.
But new information suggests this might not be the case and that Square Enix is trying to get the main game on the console. Speaking with Eurogamer, game director Hajime Tabata has come out and said that;
We’re actually doing very specific technical investigations into what’s possible at the moment. Where we are at the moment – we’ve completed those tests and have worked out where the ground lies. We’re currently in the middle of the discussion and debate about what we should be doing, and how to realise that on the Switch.
The Final Fantasy XV engine isn’t the best fit for the Switch, but Square really want the game on the system and have been speaking to Nintendo and Epic about getting the game across to that engine.
We’re talking to Epic at the moment, about maybe what we could possibly do there, and if we did a Switch version maybe we’d be able to partner and do something there. Their Unreal environment is just amazing, and will be very useful. You have to have all those options on the table – without that, it’d be impossible to make a decision about what we can do on that platform.
No matter what solution they eventually do choose, its still going to be a few years away. It is, however, exciting to see developers be excited about the Switch and actually want to bring their games over, even if it’s technically challenging. Kudos.
