Square Enix president foresees a new Wii model in two years

Yoshi Wada believes that Wii 2 will house new features that are in line with the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360

According to a report by the Financial Times, the president of the company that brought us Final Fantasy and Lost Winds, Yoshi Wada, expects an upgraded Wii model to be released in 2011.

Wada believes that the new console will have “functionality more like that of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 or Sony’s PlayStation 3”. While he skimps on any further details, we can assume that he is referring to high-definition video output and more powerful hardware.

Another interesting point Wada makes is that the new system will “possibly [include] a different controller”, at the same time suggesting that the new motion controls that are set to become a part of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 will have a limited effect on the success of those consoles.

The Wii was released here in under five years after the GameCube, so a 2011 release of “Wii 2” would fit the traditional five-year cycle of Nintendos consoles. However, if Nintendo can continue to produce innovative money-making ideas that see the Wii outsell its rivals time and time again, then “Wii 2” might just be a little further away.
