The latest issue of Japanese magazine Famitsu is on the shelves and in it a huge 10 page blow out on the upcoming Wii U title Splatoon.
There’s a lot of new information here, mostly about how the online works but also the local multiplayer action as well as the Hero Mode (the singleplayer). Firstly, the online will include matchmaking that connects to similarly skilled players based on a rating, the game will also only start once there are 8 players in the match. There will be no CPU players to pad things out, at launch this won’t be a problem but hopefully as time goes on the player base remains enough for this not to be a negative.
Speaking of negatives, you won’t be able to use voice chat with other players you are matched with. This isn’t to say there’s not voice chat that wasn’t in the magazine – just that you can’t talk to random people (so far).
Hero Mode is the single-player portion of the game, the developers say it is ‘ predominantly a 3D platformer with heavy emphasis on human-squid transformations’. When playing online mode the ink you shoot is used to paint the ground and control territory, However in Hero Mode while it is used for that it is also used in the platformer portion of the game to move forward.
The developers of the game are also aiming for Splatoon to be released worldwide at the same time, which is nice. There’s also plans to support the game post-release, whether that’s DLC or something else remains to be seen.
