Director of Hardware and Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment, John Koller, has responded to Nintendos announcement of its 3D handheld console by reiterating Sonys own direction with 3D.
"Our focus on 3D right now is on the [PS3]," he says. "The amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on PS3 and were going to concentrate our efforts there."
Although he believes that 3D technology is the next big thing in video games, he remains unconvinced that there is a significant market for handheld 3D gaming.
"[Nintendo] having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think its an interesting move but one Id like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. 8 and 9 year olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now."
Fools! If they actually did research, they would realise that the Nintendo DS doesnt just cater for ages 8-9. Their hardware development department is probably in a state of emergency right now as they scramble to create a 3D PSP. Once its released, theyll mock the 3DS for not having the trivial improvements their own handheld will have, but no-one will care because by then. The 3DS will have sold millions and well be looking forward to the next generation.
