Sonic the Hedgehog is getting a makeover, again. Sonic Boom is a new sub series of Sonic universe that incorporates new games on the exclusively on the Wii U and 3DS  as well as new toy range and TV show. The ‘modern Sonic’ we’ve come to know recently won’t be going away as of yet.

The Wii U version of the game is being developed by Los Angeles based developers Big Red Button and will run on the CryEngine 3 engine by Crytek. The Nintendo 3DS version is being developed by Sanzaru Games. Sonic Team are still working with the new western teams in collaboration.

The games are being developed to take full advantage of the Wii U and 3DS hardware and will be slightly different games. What will be the same between the two is Sonic’s traditional sense of speed and a new Enerbeam mechanic which is shown briefly in the trailer. The game will focus not only on Sonic but also a redesigned team of Tails, Knuckles and Amy in two to four player co-op play. Polygon has a full interview with the development team.

Sonic Boom is exclusive to western markets and won’t be released in Japan. Sonic Team will continue to make Sonic games for that region. The games don’t have a release date outside of ‘soon’ but the TV show will start later this year in North America.

So then Sonic fans, what are you thoughts – we’re sure you have some.
