Some Switch games won’t support Cloud Saves, Nintendo says “vast majority” will
Over the weekend some news has dripped out about just what games will and won’t support cloud saves. The cloud saves feature will be a part of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription when it launches later this month.
While most games support it, and it’s up to the developers of games to choose to turn it off – three games have emerged so far as not supporting the feature – Splatoon 2, Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee, and Dark Souls Remastered. So why is this happening?
In a statement made to Game Informer, Nintendo has said that this is to ensure “fair play” on certain titles where cloud saves may be abused.
“The vast majority of Nintendo Switch games will support Save Data Cloud backup. However, in certain games this feature would make it possible to, for example, regain items that had been traded to other players, or revert to a higher online multiplayer ranking that had been lost. To ensure fair play, Save Data Cloud backup may not be enabled for such games. To ensure that Save Data Cloud backups cannot be used to unfairly affect online multiplayer rankings, the feature will not be enabled in Splatoon 2.”
What do you think of this decision, let us know in the comments.
Both (self-)justifications are ridiculous excuses for poor architectural design and implementation in the online profile management components, as, these data should never rely on the user/client system as the source of truth. (Information Security 101)
This is such a backwards move from Nintendo, almost defeats the purpose of having cloud saves in the first place.
