Looking cool Joker!
Hoooo boy. We’ve known that Joker, the latest addition to the Smash Ultimate roster, was due out this month, but we didn’t know just how much else would come in the update. It’s a lot.
Nintendo revealed their plans for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 3.0 update today in a 15 minute(!) video. There’s a lot to unfold here, so let’s break it down piece by piece.
This is going to be the big one for a lot of people. Joker from Persona 5 is finally making his debut in Super Smash Bros., and he looks incredible. There’s way too much to mention here, but Joker will be joined by his signature Persona, Arsene, in battle, after filling a meter over time, by taking hits, or if he’s behind in damage or stocks. Once Arsene has been summoned, all of Joker’s moves are augmented, making each of them more powerful. It looks awesome.
Joker, of course, also comes with a new stage, Mementos, a beautiful, dynamic stage that changes depending on the music playing, with music from Persona 3 and Persona 4 totally changing the colours and look of the stage to match their respective games. There’s also a tonne of music from Persona 3, 4, and 5, with a few remixes thrown in, because of course there is.
There’ll also be a DLC Spirit Board, featuring characters from the Persona series and new Mii costumes for both Persona and Sonic characters.
Yeah, we know, this wasn’t exactly the best kept secret, but now it’s official! An all new Stage Builder will hit Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the 3.0 update, and it looks incredibly involved and powerful. You’ll be able to draw stages using the touch screen, add elements on multiple layers to create aesthetics that don’t interfere with fighters, and add stage hazards, teleporters, and so much more.
The best part? You’ll be able to share them! Not only with friends, but with players around the world, using the Smash World applet in the Nintendo Switch Online app (more on that in a sec).
Finally, the Nintendo Switch Online app will be more than just a Splatoon portal, with the introduction of Smash World. Smash World is a sort of Miiverse-light, where players will be able to share videos (using the all-new video editor, no less) and stages with people around the world. You’ll be able to watch videos in the app, and queue up stages to download when you’re back at your console.
There’s so much content here, it’s hard to believe that there’s more on the way. But there’s still four more characters to come, and if it’s anything like Joker, there’s sure to be surprises.
The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 3.0 update is currently scheduled to launch on the 17th in the US, and if the Japanese Nintendo twitter feed is anything to go by, that means tomorrow (the 18th) for us. You can watch the full video below.
Gotta go fast.
It is a Holiday Gaming Extravaganza
