Shigeru Miyamoto has been bestowed in Japan with a cultural award, The Person of Cultural Merit. He is the first game developer ever to make the list.

Miyamoto has said in response to getting the award that “I’m thankful that light is being shined upon the genre of games. This is a job where you can’t do anything by yourself.”

The award is decided by a wide range of government officials and decided upon every year. An award ceremony will take place this Sunday at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo according to GamesIndustry.biz
