The new 3D touchscreen LCD panel looks to be exactly what the Nintendo 3DS needs

As reported earlier, the screen will indeed display 3D images using a "parallax barrier" over the LCD screen. This has a series of vertical slits that direct the path of light to the left and right eyes.

Super fun specs time! The new 3D LCD will be 3.4 inches (suitable!) and have a resolution of, wait for it, 480 x 854 pixels (gorgeous!). Now, considering that the DS has a paltry resolution of 256 x 192, expect a quantum leap in graphics come E3. Dont forget that this is even greater than the Wiis output resolution of 640 x 480. Surely this means that the Wiis successor will output in high-definition?

So how exactly will you play 2D DS games on the 3D screen? Sharps got the answer: the panel can switch between 2D and 3D modes, plus its 3D mode can be viewed in both portrait and landscape orientations, which is good for potential 3D Brain Training titles and so on.

Sharp also brags about "advances in CG-Silicon technology", with the LCD panel producing twice as much brightness and ten times better contrast as conventional 3D LCDs.

Nintendo themselves havent yet revealed the manufacturer or specs of the 3DS, so well have to wait till E3 for the juicy facts.
