It looks as if Warner Brothers inadvertently sent a confidential listing to French gaming site JeauxActu, alongside other unannounced titles Fear 3 and a new Batman game for Wii and DS. The only information provided in the document was that the game could be in development for the Wii and PC as well as DS. WB published 5th Cell’s Scribblenauts this year, but there is no indication the same developer will return to the project. Developers who worked on Scribblenauts recently went public expressing their disappointment that the controls were not as polished as they would have liked. 5th Cell have said they wouldnt mind leaving the DS behind so they can move on to bigger projects, so a new team might take up the reins for a sequel.
Is a sequel likely to be unveiled this early? A second Scribblenauts wouldnt be hard to make, as a foundational library of literally thousands of items already exists, so surely a sequel would only need a slightly more finessed control scheme, and therefore a shorter development cycle. It doesn’t matter of course, as most of us are still playing and enjoying Scribblenauts, despite a few minor gripes.
The original article has since been pulled from the French website, an ominous sign that the leak could be legit.
