Good times.

The plugged has now been officially pulled on the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Nintendo DS and Wii games with online features are now reporting an error code 20110 with a message about the service being discontinued.

Some online matches are still running at the time of writing but for the most part all online features of DS and Wii games are now dead. All those poor Pokemon forever trapped in the GTS.

The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was launched in November 2005 originally on the Nintendo DS with titles like Tony Hawk’s American Sk8land and Mario Kart DS. The Nintendo DSi Shop, Nintendo DS Browser and Nintendo DSi Browser will continue to operate and on the Wii the Wii Shopping Channel, Internet Channel, Youtube and Hulu are still around.

The closure of these online services is due to GameSpy discontinuing their services, many more companies than just Nintendo will and have been affected.

There’s a shred of good news here with fans already working on ways to get games and DLC available again with server emulators. Check out their progress here, you will need some homebrew tools to get it work.

RIP Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. You were fun.
