President and CEO offers some clarification on polarising project choice
Retro’s new project was one that almost every Nintendo fan was looking forward to being revealed – but nobody really expected it to be a sequel to Donkey Kong Country Returns. People were expecting a new Metroid, a brand new IP or even a revival of the relatively unknown Nintendo game, Star Tropics. Tropical Freeze, the sequel to Donkey Kong Country Returns, was announced in the Nintendo Direct as being the project that Retro was seemingly spending all this time on.
Understandably, for some, there was a little bit of a outcry. But Retro have come forward and clarified why they’ve decided to work on another Donkey Kong Country Returns game, rather than anything else.
Well after DKCR we had a lot of gas left in the tank. Lots of cool things we wanted to do. The underwater levels, the 3D camera, we were just very excited to work with Donkey Kong and we wanted to continue that, and the Wii U hardware allowed us to do a lot of really cool tricks. So it was natural to go from the Wii version into the Wii U version and that same level of excitement and a whole lot of new stuff.
