Report: Nintendo to end Wii U production by end of 2016

So how about that NX then?

The life of the Wii U could be cut short if the latest report by the Japanese publication Nikkei is to be believe.

The report suggests that Nintendo will cease manufacturing of the console by years end. The idea would be that Nintendo have either enough stock on hand to sell through going forward or that something new is on the way.

The original WIi was discontinued in 2013, a year after the release of the Wii U, those consoles are still selling in smaller quantities each quarter.

All of this news then points to a potential release of the NX in 2016, selling on stockpile doesn’t last forever. However none of this news is confirmed by Nintendo, Nikkei has a good track record and when they report on something there’s usually truth to it – in parts.

If the Wii U is to finish up this year it will mean it has fallen well short of the sales of the GameCube, the Wii U is currently at 12.6 million units sold as of last year, the GameCube is at 21.74 million. The math just doesn’t work out.

Sad to see the life of the Wii U cut short, but in the end it might just be for the better.
