Reggie: Wii 2 doesnt need to release next year, but…

The Nintendo honchos comments about the Wii successor are surprisingly less vague this time

Ah, the Wii. That steam train of a console has sold over 75 million units since December 2006, 23% more than the PS2 in the same amount of time, and its showing no signs of slowing. "As we sit here today were saying the Wii has many, many more units to sell," says Reggie. Lets face it, hes totally right. You only need to look to the next month to see how strongly Nintendo is pushing the system for the holiday season. Games like Donkey Kong Country Returns, FlingSmash and Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary Edition are on the way, and new value-added Wii bundles have been released. More and more people are buying a second Wii, and you can bet your bottom dollar that therell be a Wii under millions of Christmas trees next month.

But its never enough for you all, is it? You always want more, more, MOAR. All you care about is the next system. "Where is the Wii 2?" "When are they gonna release the Wii 2?" "Why dont they release the Wii 2 now?" Nintendo has always responded to such queries with "no comments" or, at best, "were always developing the next system" remarks.

Now, Reggie has come out and said this to Kotaku: "After weve reached an installed base of 45 million here in the U.S., we can have a conversation about the next generation." So, if the Wii keeps selling at the rate it is now, we should be knocking on Reggies door come mid-2012.

US readers, you know what to do.
