Project M will live on in our Project Memories
In a blog post on their website today, the development team behind Project M have announced that the mod is no longer being actively developed.
In the statement, the development team have said that they feel Project M version 3.6 is ‘complete’, and that they are looking forward to moving on to future projects.
…it’s been an excruciating call to make, but it’s been made a bit easier by our satisfaction with the previous and final release, v3.6. We’ve spent six years polishing Project M, and rather than let it drag on through another several years of dwindling development and change-fatigue in the competitive circle, we’re going to consider our work complete.
Project M is a downloadable mod for Super Smash Bros Brawl that has been developed over the last six years, which adds characters, skins, levels and most importantly, adjusts game mechanics in Brawl.
The mechanical changes were mostly geared towards competitive players who found that some new elements in Brawl made the game less viable for competitive play compared to it’s predecessor Super Smash Bros Melee.
Project M enjoyed a large following, thanks to the relative ease of software modification on the Wii and a popularity among competitive Smash Bros communities.
Interestingly, Project M is no longer downloadable from their website, so if you want to set up Project M now you’ll have to use a version you already have, or hope that you know somebody with a copy already.
It’s an event that might have been inevitable. Smash Bros for Wii U has gained a degree of acceptance in the competitive community, and with Nintendo actively playing a part in tournaments it was unlikely that Project M could remain a mainstay in the competitive scene.
Still, Project M was a labour of love from a group of Smash Bros fans who wanted more from their game and were willing to put in the hours and effort to give Smash Bros fans a competitive and customisable Smash experience. We wish them all the best for their future ventures.
It's Black, Back Again.
