Includes some roster confirmations, assist Pokemon and more!

The much talked about Pokkén Tournament project that Nintendo have been working on with Namco has finally had some major gameplay elements shown off, although it’s worth reminding our readers that (for now) the game is presently confirmed for Arcades only.

We don’t want to be too presumptuous but we’d wager there’s a Wii U version coming sometime after that.

The footage confirms that the game will operate on a 3D Arena-like plane rather than a typical 2D one. This means it’ll play similar to the recently released Naruto and Dragon Ball Z fighting games rather than more traditional fighters like Tekken and Mortal Kombat.

The Japan-exclusive Nico Nico stream showed off several new additions to the roster and also confirms what we possibly didn’t know – the game won’t be relegated to bipedal fighting types. Confirmed playable characters include Pikachu, Gardevoir and even Suicune.  They join the already announced Machamp and Lucario.

In addition to the main playable Pokemon, it appears there’ll be support type Pokemon too that can be taken into battle with the player. They’ll act similarly to the Pokeballs in Smash Bros, allowing players to call them in for a quick attack before retreating swiftly. Presently confirmed Support Set Pokemon include Lapras, Emolga, Fenniken and Snivy.

Location tests for the game will begin on the 30th of January. Presumably, we might be able to see more footage then. When we have an official feed for the new footage we’ll be sure to post it!
