Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back looks to be coming back to cinemas in Australia and Zew Zealand starting October 8, a full 15 years after the film’s original 1999 Australian theatrical release.
Session times have not been made available so far, but should begin to appear on the Australian and New Zealand Hoyts pages closer to the date.
Panned by critics, Pokémon: The First Movie was unsurprisingly loved by hordes of Poké-fans the world over. It was the first in a series that has now reached 16 films, and hit during what was probably the height of Poké-mania.
We can only hope they don’t forget to throw on Pikachu’s Vacation beforehand.

Why Nintendo why? I saw it in the cinemas back then in 1999 and it was terrible. A cash grab/triple TV episode back then and it is again now. Can’t say I saw another other poke movies after this one, but I assume they are better?
Oh dear, they’ve got me with this. I think I still have my holographic aztec mew card I got from the first time it was aired here somewhere at home.
I was a kid when I saw this in the cinema and now I’ll be going again as an adult. The power of Pokemon.
Watched this movie again last year and it has not aged well at all. Even as a kid, I partly watched it for the Promo Dragonite card.
