Nintendo’s next portable and home consoles to be ‘brothers’
Today at its investors and analyst briefing, Satoru Iwata was asked about why Nintendo were revamping its internal structure to marge consoles and portables, something it’s been doing for the past few years.
Iwata told the analyst that the technological gap between home and portable consoles had narrowed considerably in the past few years. The difference between the two is architecturally very similar now.
Iwata told the investor that he doesn’t know yet whether future hardware will be merged but in the future, the systems will be come ‘brothers’.
Nintendo has spent the last few years building a brand new research and development building in Kyoto for expressed idea of bringing both its handheld and home console development teams closer to together.
It will be a while before we see any games born out of this new brotherly love.
This is very good news. Aside from the obvious cross-system interaction for Wii U and 3DS, if the Wii U does end up being a financial failure, then the best way for Nintendo to move forward is to combine their handheld and consoles together. If the Wii U could somehow grab some of the 3DS’s success, everything would be different.
3ds took like 18 months to take off really, the rushed mario kart 7 should have alerted nintendo to the fact they needed something that was both quality first part and online (which we’re actually still waiting for on Wii U) because once people are online with the nintendo games the enthusiasm spreads. how many people do we all know that jumped on the 3ds platform when animal crossing hit recently? I can think of at least 5 people i know that picked up a 3ds when that hit
