Nintendo’s EAD And SPD teams to merge under massive changes internally at Nintendo

Times they are a changin'

It’s been a big week of Nintendo team news, the biggest certainly is the appointment of Tatsumi Kimishima to president and now this.

Two of the biggest and best teams at Nintendo are merging into one under some radical changes to the company structure. EAD (Entertainment Analysis & Development Division) and SPD (Software Planning & Development Division) will see become one team known as Entertainment Planning & Development Division (EPD).

Shigeru Miyamoto who was the manger at EAD has the newly minted Creative Fellow title moving aside for Shinya Takahashi to take control of the new group. EAD Tokyo’s Yoshiaki Koizumi has also moved up to be deputy GM at EPD.

There’s also two new divisions at Nintendo, Platform Technology Development Division and Business Development Division. The first group is responsible for developing new hardware, operating systems, development environments and more. The division has Platform Technology Development Division working under it which is now the merged Integrated Research & Development Division and the System Development Divisions.

The Business Development Division looks less at the hardware and well, more at the business obviously. It will work not only on the console game business, but also games on smart devices and the use of Nintendo’s IP.

It’s great to see Nintendo getting leaner and meaner before their kick off their next (hopefully more successful) console and smart phone games.
