Capcom goes all out with Street Fighter on the 3DS and then some

There’s really no doubting Capcom when it comes to the Nintendo 3DS. They’ve got two of their biggest franchises on the system, and this one will be there on day one. Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition is set to be the most complete version of the game yet, with over 35 fighters, 3 costumes for each, full international online play, and figure trading and battle via StreetPass.

SSFIV: 3D Edition is the full experience you get on the consoles, but on the Nintendo 3DS. There’s been no cutting down here and even the graphics look almost on-par with the console versions (but not in HD, obviously). The 3D effect in the game is subtly used in “2D Mode” which is the standard Street Fighter mode you’re all used to. The newer “3D Mode” puts the fight on a 45 degree perspective and makes better use of the 3D effects. You can switch between the two on the fly, battling someone when you’re in 2D mode and they could be in either the same or in 3D mode. It’s nice to be able to switch between the two, and it’s even nicer to have a mode designed to showcase just what the 3DS can do.

The game can be played with either the circle pad or the traditional d-pad, either of which work well for pulling off some hard combos. Joystick flyboys won’t have much of a hard time adjusting, either. For the amateur amongst us, Capcom has put all the special attacks for easy use on the bottom screen. For those worried about the d-pad’s positioning, as I’ve said in other impressions, it’s not a problem at all.

Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition is a launch title for the 3DS in Japan and will hopefully be one for the 3DS when it launches here in Australia come March.
