After a long absence the Pilotwings franchise is back and in a new way. It’s still the same Pilotwings you know but it’s been infused with the Mii and ’Resort’ look and feel that Nintendo have created.
After a long absence, the Pilotwings franchise is back and in a new way too. It’s still the same Pilotwings you know and love but it’s been fused with both the Mii’s and the whole "resort" look that Nintendo previously tapped into with Wii Sports Resort.
We managed to have a really good and hard play with this one, as it was one of the longest demos available on show. The first thing we noticed was that with the 3D Depth Slider at full volume, it caused some serious pain to our eyes. You’ll no doubt want to slide this one down a little otherwise you will probably throw up. We’ve noticed this with a few 3DS games, and between the two of us writing we’ve had to set the 3DS levels at varying strengths. We think everyone will be different with the 3DS and you’ll have to come to a compromise to find something comfortable that works for you. But enough about that, more about the game itself!
The demo featured three classic ’vehicles’ from the other games; a light plane, a rocket pack and a hang glider. Each game controlled the same, using the circle pad for precise control. The pad allows players to just tap the direction of the craft and makes the game feel a lot more responsive than you would expect. With these three crafts, we managed to sample three different modes of the game. The first is a mode in which you fly through rings, and no, it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as Superman 64. Time trial was also included, but the classic Landing mode was also included, involving players to attempt to safely bring their vehicle down to a designated area safely. There’s also three times of day available to fly through but we only were able to sample the day time. As a cool aside, the game is set on Wahu Island, the same island that Wii Sports Resort took place on – a nice touch.
We did previously mention that the 3D graphics were quite overpowering on full strength, but that doesn’t mean that the 3D effects are bad – it’s actually really helpful in a game like this. Trying to line up your craft with balloons and rings is much easier when you have that extra dimension to work with.
We really enjoyed the time we had with Pilotwings Resort, and it’s definitely one of the best games to take advantage of the 3D effects for something other than just looking pretty.
Sonic and speed, they just go together
Not ideal.
Finally, some preorder bonuses.
