When Nintendogs was such a success for the Nintendo DS, the next logical conclusion for the series would be to add the other favourite pet out there, the cat. They didnt disappoint, but perhaps this isnt the best game to show at a crowded expo. The demo we played of Nintendogs+Cats did little to show us the difference between its predecessor besides the addition of cats.
What it did show off, however, was a new method of interacting with your beloved pet. With the animals now up on the larger 3D screen, interacting with the animals still remains on the bottom screen, but a live silhouette of the animal now appears on the bottom screen too. This new way to interact is smarter and more intuitive, as the animals serve a much better purpose being on the bigger screen in 3D but without this control scheme, things would feel disconnected.
The demo we got to sample included one dog and one cat in a room with a few toys and dress-ups to play. Nothing "new" was shown to use but in the end, it was just a demo. The animals on the top screen look amazing in 3D, with the cats and dogs looking very life like with great fur effects too. The 3D effect of them rubbing up against the screen didnt stick out of the screen as much as we expected, however.
Nintendogs+Cats is a launch title in Japan and will most likely be one in Australia when the console launches in March. There will again be three versions of the game with different breeds of dogs and cats available. The StreetPass functionality for this one should be interesting as well, though we didnt get to test it properly at the event.
