It’s been a long time between drinks for Kid Icarus fans, possible some of them may have even died since the last game came out. Maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but you get the idea. It’s been long – too long. Now with the mastermind behind Super Smash Bros. Brawl working on the newest title in the series, Kid Icarus: Uprising, there are two reasons to celebrate.
The demo we played of Uprising was one of the most complete games we had a chance to play at Nintendo World 2011. There were two main modes to battle in, as well as an epic boss battle to fight in. The first, for the most part was an on-rails segment of the gameplay, with Pit flying through the sky. We could not help but notice during this sequence just how beautiful the scenery was, including the amazing skyline. The gameplay style was very similar to rail shooters similar to Sin & Punishment 2, including the targeting and shooting mechanics. The second mode we tried out was on land and was also very similar to the flying controls except it was on foot.
The game is primarily controlled using the circle pad to move Pit and the stylus used to aim and shoot. All shooting is assigned to the L button with either the ability to fire rapidly by pressing the button constantly and charging shots by holding the button down and then releasing. If you’re left handed (like me) you’ll probably have problems with this game, unless there was a lefty flip mode we couldn’t see (it was in Japanese after all). We were assured that the two levels we played would appear in the final game, but that we weren’t to take them on as being indicative of the game’s usual level length.
The game’s graphical presentation was astounding. Both the 3D effect and overall polish of the graphics were great. This really hit home when we played the opening level, which saw us on a train ride through the cloudy skys. The clouds in the sky all had depth, and as Pit and the monsters flew towards us they all popped out perfectly in 3D.
The game was also fully voiced, albeit in Japanese, with both Pit and Palutena having quite a bit of dialogue as we were playing through the game.
Sakurai was also on stage for the second day of the expo, demoing the game with great proficiency. It’s a bit of a shame though that, me being left handed, I was pretty bad at the game overall due to the awkwardness of handling the stylus with my right hand.
There is still no official word yet as to when Kid Icarus: Uprising is due, but it is looking remarkably polished so we’re hoping it’s not going to be too far off launch for all regions.
