Nintendo World 2011: Day 2 Report and Impressions

The fun continues, the lines get bigger. There is also a surprise guest.

Day two of the Nintendo World 2011 expo was going to be even bigger (no it didn’t magically inflate in size over night) but with it being a Sunday and there being no school in Japan well there were going to be lines. Yesterday we missed out on playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time because of the two hour long lines. Being the smart cookies we are we headed off again early, trecking all the way to the Messe from our hotel to arrive in about the same time again. We were even closer to the door than the day before too.

But do you think that would have helped us play Zelda any sooner? No. When we got to the line it said 110 minutes already, so we figured if were ever going to play this thing – we just had to bite the bullet and do it. It was hard, there were moments of insanity, but 75 minutes later we finally got our hands on the game. Nick took the Deku Tree dungeon, I took the Kokiri Forest. On learning I couldn’t escape the forest and head to the field, I decided, like a boss, that I would just race through to the Deku Tree dungeon in the short time we had allotted. I didn’t make it but the tiny Japanese women watching me was quite impressed.

Today wasn’t all about Zelda however, we had a ton more games to check out during the course of the day and apart from Professor Layton, we got them all. None of the lines were as bad as Zelda, but we waited 10 to 40 minutes for other titles including Steel Diver, Pilotwings Resort, AR Games and the Camera games. More detailed impressions on them all soon.

The second day brought Capcom’s goods to the stage, first up was Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition. Some small information about the game was shared, things like international online play and all the costumes available in the game were revealed but the talk was mainly about the development of the game and the series. The next big stage demonstration came in the Biohazard (Resident Evil) form with Revelations getting a showing off. Nothing new was shown of that game but Mercanaries 3D got a new trailer and the game was played onscreen showing off the village from Resident Evil 5.

By about 4:30 we were done with everything and the lines were shut off. We ended the day again with sore feet but had also made a new friend, it was the first conversation we had in English our entire trip! We also met the guys from Aussie-Nintendo on the way out, always nice to see fellow Aussies!

But the most interesting thing we saw today was a surprise showing from none other than Mr Miyamoto. He didn’t partake in the show floor fun, but instead looked from a little window above the expo. Nick spotted him and alerted us to his presence so we snapped this candid shot of him. We threw a wave as well but didn’t get one back.

Since we’ve played everything we won’t be going back to the expo for the third day, we’re going to explore Japan. But we’re now hard at work bringing you impressions of everything we’ve played. Everything.
