The Big N has shut down speculation over a Hi-Definition successor to the Wii, but offers slight reassurance that HD gaming will be considered in future

Denise Kaigler, corporate affairs representative for Nintendo of America, spoke to IGN claiming that there weren’t enough HDTVs in households to justify supporting HD technology around the time of the Wii’s launch in late 2006- “When Wii launched back in 2006, the household saturation of HDTVs was much lower than it is now. Nintendo didn’t include HD capability back then because that would have been a cost that everyone had to pay, whether or not they had an HDTV. There’s something not very fair about that.”

Some gamers are still hoping for a ‘Wii HD’ or ‘Wii 2’ that will allow current or future Wii games to be played in resolutions above the current best output of 480p should stop holding their breath. Whilst the inclusion of HD resolutions in future Nintendo consoles might be a given, Kaigler remained coy about when the company would implement HD into console development- “We have no current plans to launch an HD version of Wii, but HD is one of the things we’re keeping in mind for the future.”
