Satoru Iwata wants third parties to succeed

Nintendo bigwig, Satoru Iwata, yesterday explained that he doesnt expect the 3DS to shift 16 million units before the end of the Japanese fiscal year (March 31st, 2012) unless one or more of the following titles are released before then: Animal Crossing, Mario Kart and Super Mario. Iwata confirms at least one of these titles will be released in that time frame.

Iwata also reveals that Nintendo is cagey about the release dates to allow third party games to sell well, in accordance with the goals set when 3DS was announced. This is also to maintain momentum of the console throughout its life cycle. Nintendo understands its titles are integral to the success of the console, but admit the company alone cannot support the platform.

Iwata goes on to say that the Wii Vitality Sensor, announced so long ago in June 2009, is not dead. Due to the fact that Nintendo has not yet reached an acceptable level of test accuracy on human subjects, the product is being withheld. Nintendo is aiming for 99% accuracy among consumers biological information, although 80% would be acceptable. Iwata cannot "clearly say" when the product will be ready for market.
