Nintendo on what will make the NX a success

The The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild may be a Wii U game now, but it will also be an NX game when it launches in in 2017. That hasn’t been lost on Nintendo and even stranger, they’ve even decided to give an outline of their NX plans. These plans they hope will make the console a success.

Speaking  to the Financial Post, Nintendo of America’s executive vice-president of sales, Scott Moffitt was asked about what lessons they learned from the Wii U – that they can apply to the NX.

First, it’s really important to have the right content. Software drives hardware. We’ve proven that multiple times. The right game can really lift a system. With The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild being among the titles we’re working on for NX, we’re very excited it will be an immediate reason game fans will want to buy the hardware.

So you need great games, Breath of the Wild seems to be shaping up to be one – but what else?

Second, it’s important to have clear positioning for your proposition and be able to explain it to consumers in a simple and easy way. Those are among the things that we are working on for NX. Third, we need to showcase all the things that make Nintendo great. When we bring out a title it has to be of exceptional quality, it has to be fun, it has to be an immersive experience, and put a smile on families’ faces. As long as we stay true to those things, we’ll deliver what we want.

And certainly there are other factors, like third-party content. Our mission is to create the largest install base possible so that third-party developers will want to bring their content to our systems.

There’s that nasty word, third party console. Instead of trying to cover it up the situation – Moffitt spoke opening about and hopes the NX will be a good enough concept to get companies to bring their games to the system.

There’s a tendency for people to focus on certain publishers or certain titles. But when you step back and take a look at it, we have great publisher relationships with companies like Ubisoft – which had some exciting announcements this week – Capcom, and Warner Bros. They have been strong and will continue to be strong partners in the future.

Having said that, what will attract even more partners to our platform — which, of course, is something we’d like to do — is having a piece of hardware that provides interesting ways for these companies to bring their game creations to life, one that’s easy to program and work on, and that has a large enough install base of game fans that are looking for a variety of content.

So, for an avid gamer a game like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of those that you can’t not play. It’s a new high point for the franchise that offers gamers incredible freedom. Your gaming arsenal will not be complete without a Nintendo system and this game in your house.

Nintendo’s confident that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will drive sales, they’re confident that the system will speak to third parties and get them to bring their titles the system.

Are you confident that this will happen? Let us know in the comments.

Biggest issue I can foresee is that people will just end up buying the Wii U version of Zelda anyway. Why buy a new console for the game if you already own a Wii U? They’re gonna need more than that.

Well the NX is for the people who had a Wii but didn’t realise the WiiU was something else. That’s why the NX has Zelda and will have splatoon, smash and Mario kart as well. To encourage people to get in by skipping a gen.

I’ve been a Nintendo fan for over 25 years. The NX will be the first console I won’t rush to get regardless of how “great” it may seem. I’ll be buying Zelda on my Wii U.

It’s too early to tell. I think it needs another system seller alongside Zelda. But if they can find it, just watching people run to Zelda at E3 reminded me of E3 2006. I believe they can have another Wii level success.

They are saying all the things that they were saying before the Wii released, talking red and blue oceans and expanding the user base. I’m getting the same vibe I got at the end of the Gamecube era, albeit the Gamecube managed a stronger finish than the Wii U will (though Zelda looks like it has the potential to be one of the all time greats).

At the end of the day, it’s too early to tell. But I think this Nintendo is dangerous, and dangerous Nintendo results in good games and good systems. Coming from someone who did not buy a Wii U and who sees the Wii U as an utter failure, I have faith.

And WB has been great for the Wii U with all of their LEGO games, from the LCU exclusive to dual screen co-op for all others which makes the WIi U version the definitive one, as I can’t stand LEGO in splitscreen anymore.
