Nintendo has announced it has ceased production of the New Nintendo 3DS with immediate effect.
The New Nintendo 3DS was the smaller of two updated 3DS models introduced in 2014, the larger XL is expected to remain in production. Now let us all embrace our New 2DS XL overlords.
Australia was lucky enough to receive the New Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL just a month after its Japanese launch in October 2014, the rest of the world didn’t get the console until January 2015.
We’ll miss you New 3DS with your SNES inspired face buttons and well designed face plates. Still never did find a glow in the dark Boo plate.

I’m still annoyed to this day they never gave the DL faceplates! I know there is a market for limited edition consoles – but I would have happily bought multiple faceplates for my XL – and I’d hazard there might have been a bigger install base for them also.
Love my Fire Emblem face plate – gives it personality1
Note to self. Wait a generation or two after Nintendo release something…
So sad. This is easily the best 3DS
Makes sense, wouldn’t be surprised if they end up just keeping the 2DSXL since the switch will take over for handheld gaming
I can see the 2DS XL getting discontinued after a year in the west. 2DS & New Nintendo 3DS XL seem like the go to devices in the west.
