It would appear that Nintendo is now super serious about getting its characters and franchises on the big screen.
In a new interview with Japanese news site Asahi Shinbun, Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima has revealed that the company is hoping to release a movie within 2-3 years. They’re hoping to do most of the production themselves.
Earlier this year Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about the company possibly making movies. Speaking to Fortune he said “As we look more broadly at what is Nintendo’s role as an entertainment company, we’re starting to think more and more about how movies can fit in with that, And we’ll potentially be looking at things like movies in the future.”
Miyamoto noted that Nintendo has been offered many times to make movies based on its characters before. Nintendo is also working with Universal to bring its characters to their theme parks. There’s something brewing behind the scenes.
We just hope it doesn’t turn out to be as much of a flop as the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie.
