When Nintendo released its financial reports today it listed forecasts for the upcoming year for all its consoles, except for the Nintendo DS. The Wii U, Wii and 3DS all got a mention, but Nintendo left the DS column blank.

While not confirmed by Nintendo or mentioned by the company this likely means that Nintendo has stopped or will stop production of the handheld console which has just entered its 9th year.

The Nintendo DS has sold 153 million units worldwide and is only second to the PlayStation 2 on 155 million consoles. Its unlikely to surpass the console now as Nintendo focuses on the Nintendo 3DS.

Since 2004 there has been 933 million copies of DS games sold around the world. The Nintendo DS first launched in Japan in 2004, but Australian didn’t get the console until 2005. Along the way Nintendo released the DS Lite, the DSi and the larger DSi XL.

The Nintendo DS came at time where there was no smart phones, no tablets and a took the world by storm. Kids, teenagers, gamers and adults alike took to the Nintendo DS like moth to a flame. The Nintendo DS had something for everyone and will be remembered for years to come for its incredible software library.

We could go on about the Nintendo DS for years, perhaps we will have to devote a Vookcast to it. But for now, lets get nostalgic – share some of your favourite Nintendo DS memories below.
