Big changes afoot at the big N.
This move will see DeNA and Nintendo develop games based on Nintendo IP that are original and suitable for smart devices like phones and tablets. They will feature all of Nintendo’s iconic characters.
The move, Nintendo says it to compliment the companies existing dedicated video game systems like the Wii U and the 3DS. It will allow Nintendo to reach users of smart devices who may never normally pick up a gaming console. DeNA will also be able to leverage Nintendo’s IP to strengthen its business.
To be clear, Nintendo is not giving up on its traditional gaming console but instead using mobile to drive people to premium experiences on consoles.
In addition to games Nintendo and DeNA are also developing an online membership service that is accessible from smart devices, the PC as well as the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. It is set to launch in Fall 2015 and is no doubt the reason for the closure of Club Nintendo.
Nintendo and DeNA are putting their money where their mouth is as well with each company investing in each other. Nintendo will purchase roughly 10% of the companies shares. DeNA as well will also invest into Nintendo’s shares to the equivalent of 1.24%.
And it looks Grand.
